What Resist 86 is for
Resist 86 is a two-component, moisture-curing inorganic zinc ethyl silicate. It is not an epoxy. It is very high in zinc dust and conforms to SSPC Paint 20 Level 1 composition. It can be a primer or a single-coat system on carbon steel in atmospheric service.
Specifiers choose inorganic zinc for structural steel and piping in highly corrosive industrial and offshore atmospheres, including refineries, power plants and bridges. It also suits hot steel up to its published heat limits.
Typical applications
- Properly prepared carbon steel only
- Structural steel and piping in refineries, power plants and bridges
- Primer or single-coat system in highly corrosive atmospheric exposure
Limitations to check
- Cure needs moisture. Jotun's drying data assume 70% relative humidity, so epoxy drying assumptions don't apply.
- 540 °C is a peak rating (maximum one hour), not a continuous service temperature.
- Use on carbon steel only, in atmospheric service. It is not interchangeable with Resist 78 or with zinc epoxy primers.
- For long exposure between 400 and 540 °C, Jotun refers to a 50 µm film with a suitable topcoat and recommends Jotatemp 540 Zinc.
